Asian Women Are Sick Of Seeing Themselves Represented This Way In Media

Even when Hollywood is trying to be “neutral” it quickly veers toward bad. This generally means leaning into stereotypes, across age, race, gender, sexual identity, and creating shallow characters based on some pretty messed up ideas. Heck, sometimes they create entirely new stereotypes, like this one about Asian women having to color their hair to be interesting.

The Twitter account @nerdyasians, which purports to cover “everything artful, wonderful & sometimes miserable about asian news & culture” is currently going viral for pointing out a longstanding trope in movies and on TV. Basically, every time a show or film wants to indicate a female Asian character is “edgy” they give her colorful hair streaks:

It happens a lot:

As you can see above, the stereotype is well-documented, but it’s being talked about again in relation to the Deadpool 2 character, Yukio, played by the Japanese-Australian actress Shiori Kutsuna. Yep, she’s got the streak.

But the whole thing also went viral in 2017, when writer Anne Shi went off about it on Twitter, explaining why it’s so offensive. Basically, if you need to color your hair to be cool, what is that saying about all the women with their natural color? And who are these colorful-hair women supposed to be in contrast to?

Shi points out that it is a well-known thing that Hollywood should be hip to by now.

Just look at this Tumblr post.

It’s just a bummer to be put in these two boxes.

Despite being such a long standing issue, people are still discovering the trope through the post from @nerdyasians, and they are having feelings about it:

Some are definitely hearing about it for the first time.

But many have been noticing for awhile, and finding it pretty obnoxious.

There are some Asian women characters who have been both cool and escaped the hair-streak makeover:

But not that many. A hair streak is a small thing, but the fact that it keeps popping up over and over despite criticism from Asian writers, critics, and viewers shows exactly who is still in charge of making these decisions at the top.

Everyone Wants This Guy As Their Teacher After Seeing His Weekend Assignment

Remember being a kid and having insane amounts of homework every weekend that you basically ignored until Sunday night, when you would completely meltdown? It’s called the learning process, and it’s great.

Just kidding! Homework is horrible, and I barely ever retained anything from it, personally. Apparently some teachers are pretty sick of the system, too. Journalist Jane Martin shared a letter sent home with her kid from All Saints’ School in London. In it, a teacher named Mr. Tucker gives very specific instructions for how to prepare for the SATs that she absolutely loved:

It was so important he included a checklist:

They’re well-balanced requirements that include both activity and sitting on the couch:

Candy and friendship:

General chillaxing:

And it has some flexibility, if you want to take an hour break to study:

Mr. Tucker signed off by saying it’s his job to worry about their upcoming test, and theirs to feel good. Wow.

Mr. Tucker’s approach is in the minority:

And some people are pretty miffed that he would dare to try and make school a more positive experience for this generation:

But actually Mr. Tucker is not the only teacher who thinks stress doesn’t help when it comes to learning. Similar letters have been handed out at other schools:

It’s incredibly refreshing to see schools trying to prioritize letting kids be kids—as long as Mr. Tucker is okay.

He’s fine! Probably.

This Dog Had No Chill Upon Seeing Her Favorite Toy Come To Life

Perhaps the thing that makes dogs so goddamn pure is the fact that they’re so easy to please. Some love, walks, treats, and belly rubs are all they require for a completely blissful existence (is your heart hurting already?).

So, when you go above and beyond for your dog, their excitement goes THROUGH THE ROOF, and it’s a wonderful thing to witness. One such moment is circulating all over the Internet and one pup is getting her moment of viral fame.

Meet Jolene, a lovable (and newly Instafamous) Golden Retriever living in Modesto, California.

She likes dressing up.

And she loves her toys.

But nothing could prepare Jolene for the excitement she felt upon seeing a life-sized version of her favorite Gumby toy.

At first, Jolene isn’t sure what to make of the whole situation, but once she recognizes the smell of her human inside the Gumby suit, she absolutely NO CHILL. So, of course, she tackles Gumby to ground for lots of hugs and wrestles.

Jolene’s mom Emily Crisp originally shared the video to Facebook on Thursday night — and it’s been viewed nearly 5 million times since.

The video has also been posted to Facebook and Twitter, where people can’t get enough of Jolene’s sheer happiness.

…How can you not watch this video over and over again? If only we could all make our dogs this happy with Halloween costumes.

We hope Jolene had the best cuddle session of all time with her two Gumbies.

Teen Takes The Shoes Off His Own Feet After Seeing Homeless Man With Holes In His

Labor Day is typically Summer’s last stand. It’s a 3 day weekend for most, which means we have 3 nights and 2 days to go out and enjoy ourselves, with one full day to recover before tackling a shortened work/school week.

A few people out in Louisville, Kentucky opted to spend their Labor Day weekend differently.  Fourteen year old LaRon Tunstill, better known as RonRon locally, was taking part in a barbecue set up by PurpMe (People Uplifting Real People) to feed the homeless, when he noticed a gentleman walking along the side of their spread.

He sparked a conversation with the man, and while they were talking, saw the tattered pair of shoes he was wearing.  Jason Reynolds, the founder of PurpMe, saw the shoes. “The soles were completely gone.  His toes literally touched the ground.”

RonRon immediately took off his brand new Nike Air Jordans and gave them to the man, who was reluctant to accept them at first. “At first he was like ‘no, I can’t take these because these are too expensive.’ I told him, ‘take it’ because it’s what God wanted me to do.” RonRon told WAVE.

Reynolds, still in awe of the exchange, spoke:

“It was life-changing to see that powerful moment, Just a year before, he (Tunstill) was getting into trouble and now you see that he’s changing. He used to get in a lot of trouble when I first met him.”

After RonRon’s gift, Reynolds started a GoFundMe page where 100% of the donations would go to helping children in the area.

“I always tell the kids one simple act is all it takes. Maybe you can’t change the world but you can change someone’s world.”
