Oprah Gave A Speech At The Golden Globes That's Inspiring Everyone

At the Golden Globes on Sunday night, Oprah received the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which is given by the Hollywood Foreign Press to acknowledge “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” She was the first black women to ever receive the honor, and she really prepared on hell of of a speech.

Late in 2017, famous producer Harvey Weinstein was exposed as a predator, and accused of sexual assault and harassment by a staggering number of women. The shocking case opened the floodgates; women everywhere were hashtagging their own experiences with sexual harassment and assault with #MeToo, a phrase created by activist Tarana Burke and boosted by actress Alyssa Milano.

Burke was in the audience of the Golden Globes Sunday, as were a number of other organizer’s of the new political group Time’s Up, which seeks to eradicate sexual assault and harassment in the workplace. They were the guests of actresses who wore black on the red carpet in solidarity with all the victims who have been speaking out on their experiences.

All that is to say that the night was already electric. The audience likely expected for Oprah to light things up. She’s an incredible speaker. But what she actually delivered was above and beyond.

Oprah began by saying how much it meant to her to see Sidney Poitier win Best Actor at the Academy Awards as a child. It was the first time she saw a black man celebrated in such a way.

“I tried many, many times to explain what a moment like that means to a little girl, a kid watching from the cheap seats as my mom came through the door bone tired from cleaning other people’s houses. But all I can do is quote and say that the explanation in Sidney’s performance in Lilies of the Field: ‘Amen, amen, amen, amen.'”

Poitier went on to win the Cecille B. DeMille award in 1982, and Oprah expressed how meaningful it was to her that somewhere, little girls were seeing a back women receive it for the first time.

She then thanked people in the entertainment industry who helped her along in her career, but continued to thank all the women who have been coming forward to share their experiences. Not just women in the entertainment industry, but everywhere.

She then shared the story of Recy Taylor, a young black mother who was raped on her way home from church in 1944, by six white men who were never prosecuted for their crime. She died ten days before Sunday’s award show at almost 98. Oprah explained that Taylor fought for justice with the NAACP and the lead investigator was a young Rosa Parks, who is most widely known as a prominent figure in the Civil Rights movement. Taylor was also a Civil Rights activist, sharing her story as part of her work.

Of Taylor, Oprah said, “She lived as we all have lived, too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men. For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up.”

HELL YES.

Oprah’s speech had many people crying before she was even halfway through:

After saying declaring that “speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have,” Oprah had one last thing to say to the people at home.

And some people are suggesting she be the next celebrity to run for president:

Hey, we made it through a year with—you know what, I’m not even gonna bring his name into this. Let’s just enjoy being in the presence of Oprah instead.

Reporter Shares Excerpt From Trump's Speech To The Navy–And Everyone's Perplexed

There may be literally nothing more confusing in this country than President Trump.

How do you even mix up the biggest loss of USA life in 100 years with a convenience store?

And in his speech to the US Navy, MSNBC reporter Kyle Griffin noticed that there was not one coherent thought to be found in Trump’s word salad.

INVISIBLE PLANES, Y’ALL.  INVISIBLE PLANES.  SO GOOD YOU CANT SEE THEM.

“I said, ‘That helps.   That’s a good thing.'”

Yes, this is all fun and games, but Trump is playing with lives here.  The US armed forces depend upon a Commander-in-chief to make informed decisions about their equipment as well as their plan of approach; and unless Trump is living in the DC Universe with Wonder Woman, there’s a good chance that plane is simply not invisible.

Best Man Trolls Groom By Reading His PornHub Search History During Wedding Speech

Best Man Trolls Groom By Reading His PornHub Search History During Wedding Speech

When one sits down to write a best man or maid of honor speech, the task can be a little intimidating.

These speeches tend to be an important part of the wedding reception, so the speakers want to make sure that they are heartfelt, and memorable. Usually the speeches tell embarrassing stories or fond memories of days gone by.

Thom, the best man at Danny Hodgetts’s wedding, decided to take his speech to a whole new level.

In fact Thom partnered with porn site Pornhub, to create a hilarious trip down memory lane of his Pornhub experience.

Watch the video below:

The video starts with a message from Aria, a representative of Pornhub.

She starts by reminiscing of days gone by. “We’ve been with you for years now,” she says. “Witnessing all your varying phases.”

Here were two of her favorites:

“Danny, your stamina and loyalty is very much appreciated,” Aria says. She confesses that all of the girls are “gutted” to hear he is getting married.

She also goes on to prove his loyalty by saying that through his travels he has enjoyed their website “in the most countries worldwide.”

Source

Aria makes sure to ease his worry by saying that Pornhub has saved all of his personal favorites from their website.

Aria congratulates the bride and groom and lets them know that Pornhub has a gift for them as well. Pornhub knows his wife can’t travel everywhere with him, so they have offered him a premium membership whenever he travels.

She responded to the groom’s tweet with a word of congratulations and a link to the original video:

As you might expect, Thom’s speech was a hit with the wedding party and guests.

He told Refinery29:

“Everyone at the wedding loved it. My friend’s face as it was being introduced and played was priceless. They both saw it for what is was, very good-natured humour at his expense. You can see the reactions from the crowd in the video. Wonderful.”

Congrats to the show-stealing best man, Thom, for the most memorable speech the Internet has seen in awhile.

Study Says Puppies Understand Baby Speak Better Than Regular Speech

If you’ve ever played with a puppy, you’ve probably talked to it like you’d speak to a baby.  If you’ve ever talked baby talk to a puppy, you surely had a very un-fun person ask you why you were doing that. The next time this happens you can just say “Science!” and continue to play with your dog.

A study published in Proceedings of Royal Society B showed some fascinating results about the effects of baby talk on dogs of different ages. The study was conducted by having female volunteers record the line “Hi! Hello cutie! Who’s a good boy? Come here! Good boy! Yes! Come here sweetie pie! What a good boy!” while looking at pictures of puppies, adult dogs, old dogs, and humans.

While there was little change in the pitch while looking at other humans, there was a noticeable difference when looking at the pictures of dogs. On average, the pitch increased by 13 percent for the old dogs, 11 percent for the adult dogs, and a whopping 21 percent for the puppies.

The scientists then played the recordings over the loudspeaker in an animal shelter in New York City. Upon hearing these recordings the puppies rushed over to the loudspeaker and stayed there for a while. Furthermore, they reacted better to the puppy recordings than to the human recordings, staying at the loudspeaker for longer.

The adult dogs reacted similarly to both the recording for adult dogs and the recording for humans. In both cases, the recordings were mostly ignored. They would glance over to the loud speaker and then go back to whatever they were doing before. Nicolas Mathevon, co-author of the study, speculates that “[M]aybe older dogs do not react that way because they are just more choosy and they want only to react with a familiar person.”

This study was then replicated in France and Italy with French and Italian speakers, respectively, where it achieved the same results.

So what does this all mean? An early theory has to do to do with the “Baby Schema” which is that humans evolved to find things like big eyes cute as a way to ensure early humans had a desire to take care of there offspring. As a result, we have a desire to care for other animals that also have a classically cute appearance.

However, this does not seem to be the real reason why we speak this way to puppies. According to Mathevon:

One of the hypotheses was that we humans use this dog-directed speech because we are sensitive to the baby cues that come from the face of a small baby [animal] as we are sensitive to the faces of our babies. But actually our study demonstrates that we use pet-directed speech or infant-directed speech not only because of that but maybe we use this kind of speech pattern when we want to engage and interact with a non-speaking listener. Maybe this speaking strategy is used in any context when we feel that the listener may not fully master the language or has difficulty to understand us.

So be sure to use a high pitched voice when you explain this to your pup tonight. Otherwise they might get confused.

Michelle Obama Delivered Her Final Speech As FLOTUS And Everyone Got Weepy

All good things must come to an end: most TV shows, fast food binges, and the fabulous reign of FLOTUS and Queen of Our Hearts Michelle Obama.

Obama delivered her final speech as first lady on Friday at an event honoring the 2017 School Counselor of the Year, a ceremony that she introduced in 2015 to honor distinguished high-school counselors

The audience members weren’t the only ones crying — FLOTUS herself got pretty emotional as she bid farewell to her adoring public.

Throughout her speech, she echoed the values espoused throughout the Obama presidency.

Diversity, she reminded the audience, is “not a threat to who we are. It makes us who we are.”

…Perhaps a sentiment directed at the upcoming administration?

“Lead by example,” she told the young people in the audience, “with hope, never fear.”

Yes, FLOTUS.

We can expect a final address from her husband  (who we’ll miss almost as much) President Barack Obama on January 10th in Chicago.

The Obamas will be vacating the White house in just two weeks.

~Downs eight pints of ice cream and sobs~

You can watch her full speech below (about 17 minutes into the video).

We’ll miss you, Michelle.

Michelle Obama Absolutely Destroyed Trump In A Passionate Speech In New Hampshire

Regardless of political affiliation, we’ve all had major frustrations this election cycle. The disturbing rhetoric and general negativity has been unprecedented — a true feat for American politics.

…And it doesn’t help that one candidate can’t seem to stop saying egregious things about women. Many have tried to take him down for this kind of behavior, but few have actually succeeded. Until recently, his poll numbers were strong and he seemed unfazed by his competition.

But one woman knows how to wreck her opponent: Michelle Obama.

First Lady Michelle Obama has captivated everyone’s attention with arguably the most powerful speech of the election.

While campaigning for Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire, Obama moved an entire crowd to tears with a powerful and pointed speech taking down Donald Trump, all without mentioning his name.

And that’s how you do politics.

After a few minutes of positivity, she just had to get into the cold, hard truth:

[in this campaign] we have consistently been hurting hateful language about women. Language that has been painful for so many of us, not just as women, but as parents trying to protect our children and raise them to be caring respectful adults, who think our nation’s leader should meet basic standards of human decency.

She went on to talk about a particular ~unnamed~ candidate (guess who?).

And last week we saw this candidate actually bragging about sexually assaulting women… And I can’t believe that I’m saying that a candidate for president of the United States has bragged about sexually assaulting women. And I have to tell you that I can’t stop thinking about this. It has shaken me to my core in a way that I couldn’t have predicted.

Shaken her to the core, America.

And she even addressed Trump’s “locker room talk” defense. Spoiler alert: SHE’S NOT IMPRESSED.

This was not just a lewd conversation. This wasn’t ‘locker room banter.’ This was a powerful individual speaking freely and openly about sexually predatory behavior.

You better watch out, Donald. She is not joking around. And she’s a total goddamn badass.

Then she got specific in a way that was chillingly familiar to her audience:

Screen Shot 2016-10-13 at 4.06.03 PM

It is cruel. It is frightening. And the truth is, it hurts… It’s like that sick sinking feeling you get when you’re walking down the street minding your own business. some guy yells out vulgar words about your body. Or when you see that guy at work that stands just a little too close, stares just a little too long, you feel uncomfortable in your own skin. It’s that feeling of terror and violation that too many women have felt when someone has grabbed them or forced himself on them and they’ve said no but he didn’t listen.

And she reminded the crowd that this behavior should never be considered “normal.”

As she put it, this is anything but “politics as usual.”

Within minutes of the speech hitting Youtube, FLOTUS was trending on Twitter — and people couldn’t get over how powerful her speech was.

Your move, Donald. FLOTUS is not backing down.

Is there anything Michelle Obama can’t do? We’re pretty awestruck.
