Firefighters Want to Warn People About the Danger of Leaving Water Bottles in Cars

You’ve turned off the oven, unplugged the toaster and the space heater, blown out the candles, and you never smoke in bed. The alarms are charged, and you’ve got your exit route planned and labeled. Seems like you’ve done all you can in terms of fire safety. OR HAVE YOU?

It turns out there are still more ways to start a fire that you’ve probably never even considered, and this new way involves one of fire’s only natural enemies: water.

This video of a hunky battery technician from the Idaho Power Company named Dioni Amuchastegui is gaining traction again as summer temperatures threaten vehicles. Amuchastegui was walking by a truck on his break when he noticed a little smoke inside a parked van, WYFF 4 reports. And you know what they say—where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

Amuchastegui did a helpful dramatic reenactment in a Facebook video for the power company, in an effort to warn people that the water bottles they leave in their cars on hot days pose a potential danger to their belongings.

The water bottle acts sort of like a magnifying glass, refracting and focusing the light. If you’re a little psycho who burned up ants in the driveway as a kid, you know exactly how powerful a focused beam of sunlight can be. If you weren’t, you had that classmate, and avoided them.

image

What’s especially scary about it is that the bottle was just casually tossed on the seat. You don’t have to be a mad genius engineer to start a fire in a car, MacGyver-style. Amuchastegui showed how the bottle looked when he saw it smoking out the van:

image

And the very real burn marks that were starting on the seat:

You can see his entire process in the short video:

What’s funny about this potentially devastating occurrence is that it’s been a rumor for a long time that water bottles could start car fires, but the rumor had been dismissed as an urban legend.

The Midwest City Fire Department tried to prove it to everyone with a test, igniting a fire using a water bottle that went up to 250 degrees, KFOR reported at the time.

“The sunlight will come through, when it’s filled with liquid, and act as a magnifying glass as you would with regular optics,” said Firefighter David Richardson.

“It uses the liquid and the clear material to develop a focused beam and sure enough, it can actually cause a fire, a combustion.”

But there was also a post from Hoaxslayer in 2008, in which they experimented with a variety of bottle shapes and sizes to see what the likelihood of water starting a fire really was. In their determination, they tried a number of different bottles and discovered it was indeed possible with any clear bottle in the right lighting conditions.

So, what to do? Well, you could throw your bottle under the seat, cover it up so the light won’t hit it, or carry it with you. Or buy a dark reusable container if you don’t trust yourself to do any of those things.

Though I like this survivalist angle:

Instead of seeing this new potential for starting a fire as a negative, see it as a positive! You may someday want to start a fire with a water bottle.

But most people are seeing the negative, because we all prefer to live in terror:

Except this guy. He gets it:

When life gives you car fires, make lemonade and offer it to the cute guy who puts it out. Just don’t put it in a clear plastic bottle.

Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' Breaks Billboard Top 10, And Carey Just Responded

Christmas albums are a guilty pleasure. If you play me some Yuletide songs from December 26h until November 30th of the following year, I’ll roll my eyes and dream of the different ways I can drop-kick you into oblivion.

However, from December 1st until the 25th, I’d really love it if you could just blast Christmas songs all day. I don’t even care what they are, I don’t care how slow they are, I don’t care how old they are, I don’t even care what language they’re in – I wanna hear them.

I mean everything about the song: the music video, the lyrics, Mariah’s Christmas pajamas and the bell sounds in it are nothing short of perfection.

And as it turns out, there are tons of people who agree with me, I mean how else would a song that debuted in 1994, somehow, 23 years later, make it to the Billboard Top 10 chart, if it wasn’t absolutely adored?

That’s right: The holiday staple beat out a bunch of new releases to break into the top ten play chart because it’s that friggin’ good.

Mariah Carey was super thankful for the resurgence and let her fans know.

And apparently they’re called lambs, which is about a good a name as any, I guess? Unless Maybe Carey really likes shawarma or something.

Is it an indication of our generation’s obsession with everything ’90s?

Or maybe it’s because Carey is somehow viewed as a plucky underdog who had to persevere the test of time?

I mean that can’t be right, it’s not like the song wasn’t successful when it debuted.

People started taking a stab at how they thought Mariah was taking the news.

While others brought up irrefutable points.

I mean come on, it’s not like they’re wrong, are they?

Apparently there’s a movement now to bring “All I Want for Christmas Is You” out of the top 10 and into Billboard’s Top 5 category.

I mean, why stop there? Why not make it gun for that number one spot?

Let’s make it happen people. Let’s do it for Mariah. No…not Mariah – for CHRISTMAS.

The New 'Carpool Karaoke' Featuring 'Game Of Thrones' Stars Is Everything You Want

James Corden’s video segment on the The Late Late Show with James Corden, “Carpool Karaoke” is now Carpool Karaoke: The Series. This is obviously pretty exciting news, because the videos of everyone’s favorite celebrities singing along to their own music are wildly popular, but sadly short. Apple Music has taken the concept and turned it into a full show, so you get more of your beloved TV, music, and movie stars driving around than ever.

And look who they’re teasing you with:

Entertainment Weeklyreports that Game of Thrones stars Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner filmed their episode during a visit to Austin, Texas, at the South by Southwest festival in March. Their episode premieres Tuesday at 9 p.m., but if you’re wondering how they’ll fill a half hour program about karaoke with the antics of two actors who don’t sing, a new teaser is very illuminating.

In this clip, Williams and Turner play a game they claim was popular on set the first season of GoT: just take an ordinary sentence and try to say it like Ned Stark. I know, he died so long ago, but the girl’s impressions will bring it all right back:

They do tie it into music by featuring popular music quotes, like, “Becky, look at her butt.” It’s amazing, you really can hear Ned Stark asking you to look at a woman’s butt!

Hard to wait for the rest of the episode, but enjoy this clip of the girls singing Hakuna Matata to the Game of Thrones theme song to get you through:

People Want to Replace A Confederate Statue With A Monument To This Manatee

A manatee named Snooty who has been living at the South Florida Museum for 69 years passed away in a terrible accident last Sunday after being trapped in a gateway in his enclosure. Snooty’s caretakers didn’t realize that the 1,300 pound manatee had become too big to fit through the opening. A tragic day, but Snooty did live almost 30 years longer than the average wild manatee, according to The Huffington Post.

Grief strikes us all in different ways, but even people who never heard of Snooty until he died are mourning his loss. One twist on the celebration of Snooty’s legacy is a Change.org petition calling for a statue of Snooty to replace a Confederate monument near the Bradenton courthouse. The statue has been a subject of debate for months, as folks argued it was time to take it down. Putting Snooty in its place seems like the perfect excuse to take action:

The petition already has over 7,000 signatures!

In the meantime, fans from around town built a memorial to Snooty on site, bringing him his favorite snacks, flowers, and other sweet tributes:

All very sweet gestures—though this call to make him a mascot may be a little much:

These 35 Haircut Fails Will Make You Never Want To Try A New Hairdo

I’ve had the same haircut for 27 years and I have no idea how to explain it to people. The closest I can come is just “standard male haircut,” which most people seem to understand, but is still pretty vague.

This causes some problems whenever I go to the barber and they ask me what I want. I don’t want to say “standard male haircut,” because they might think I am making fun of their profession. So instead I just say, “Uh, shorter.”

Thankfully, that always does the trick and I leave with exactly what I wanted. Still, I am always afraid that my requests are so vague that I’ll walk away looking like one of these guys.

These Siblings Recreating Their Family Photos Will Make You Want To Host A Reunion

If you have a sibling, you know that shared memories are your most precious gift. They are also your most hilarious gift, because when you think back on what you used to do, it seems really crazy. That’s why the “family photo recreation” genre is so good. It takes the past and highlights how ridiculous we all were, even when we were being cute:

Facebook page “A Different Type Of Art” compiled an excellent post of some of the greatest sibling recreation pics of all time, making it clear that you can grow old, but still not grow up:

Though the best part of the post may be all the people sharing their less viral versions in the comments. Recreation photos are now a family tradition:

Hmm, what can I get my family to do at Thanksgiving dinner? I have six months to plan, so it better be good.

People Want To Boycott 'Hamilton' After Mike Pence Was Booed When He Walked In

On Friday night, vice-president elect Mike Pence was booed by a theater audience during a showing of Hamilton in New York. As you probably expect, the city voted overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton rather than Donald Trump in the presidential election.

The cast even had something to say to Pence…

President-elect Donald Trump was quick to accuse theatre-goers of harassing his VP and demanded an apology.

Trump supporters were quick to start the hashtag #BoycottHamilton, calling on people to boycott the musical.

While others used it as an oppurtunity to thank Trump supporters for finally freeing up some tickets.

While others saw it as an oppurtunity to take a quick jab at Trump and Pence.

This Kitty Collar Blouse Is The Clothing Item Cat Lovers Will Want Right Meow

Alright, so you love your cat. No, but I mean, you really love your cat. People just don’t understand the lengths to which you’ll go for your furry friend and how you obsess over them and dress them up in outfits and carry them around your shoulder.

It’s borderline obsessive and your cat probably doesn’t care as much about you as you do them, but that’s OK. Your love knows no bounds. You know that it’s much better to give than to receive.

Which is why you want to keep your cat with you everywhere you go. Maybe even drape them around your neck and let them basically live on top of you. Unfortunately, most indoor places of business don’t take too kindly to you bringing animals indoors. Plus, cats aren’t exactly the most walk-friendly pets out there.

However, you’re in luck. There’s a way to keep a cat with you at all times, and the answer lies with this cute blouse.
