War Photographer Ends Up Being Total Fraud Who Deceived The World With Photoshop

Brazilian photographer Eduardo Martins stunned the world with his breathtaking photos taken all over the planet. But there was one big problem: they weren’t his photos.

“Eduardo Martins” was a well-known photographer, having amassed over 120,000 Instagram followers for his powerful photos of people in war-torn nations.

@edu_martinsp

But things changed recently when a few journalists started to become suspicious.

Martins had claimed to be a U.N. photographer, telling BBC Brazil via WhatsApp in August: “I am a humanitarian (volunteer) in the United Nations (UN) field. I work in the organization of refugee camps,” a claim he had made for several years.

The detail was apparently just one of many in a made-up life in which Martins claimed to be a 32-year-old Brazilian photographer who had survived leukemia as a child before landing the U.N. gig.

Martins’s photos were widely used by publications such as The Wall Street Journal and The Telegraph for several years before a reporter with the BBC, Natasha Ribeiro, started doing some research.

Ribeiro says Martins approached BBC Brazil about using his images, even offering them for free, but was only available to communicate through WhatsApp.

Martins’s excuse for no phone contact was that he was in Mosul, Iraq at the time.

As Ribeiro dug deeper, she discovered that nobody had ever heard of Martins. No government, no reporters in Mosul. Even the U.N., Martins’s supposed employer, had no record of him.

So if Martins didn’t really exist, then where were the photos coming from? And was that even Martins in his pictures?

Well, the answers were a bit startling.

The man pictured in Martins’s Instagram photos is actually British surfer Max Hepworth-Povey, not a Brazilian.

As for the photos Martins allegedly took? Many of them belong to American photographer Daniel C. Britt.

At least nine of Britt’s photos had previously been stolen by Martins, according to the BBC, and had been sold to agencies like Getty and Zuma.

Martins had mirrored some photos or made minor changes using Photoshop to prevent anyone, including Britt, from doing a reverse image Google search to connect them back to the originals.

After a Brazilian gallery expressed interest in doing an exhibit of Martins’s work, fellow photographer and journalist Fernando Costa Netto, who had an online friendship with Martins, unintentionally clued Martins in to the investigation surrounding his authenticity.

Martins’s Instagram account was mysteriously deleted, and a final WhatsApp message from Martins said: “I’m in Australia, I made the decision to spend a year in a van running the world. I’ll cut everything, including internet, tb (also) I deleted the GI (Instagram). when I come back…Thanks, I’ll delete the zap [sic], stay with God.”

The number associated with Martins’s WhatsApp account has also since been deleted.

Twitter shared the shocking news:

Some found it rather impressive:

But also a bit unsettling:

As for the true identity of Martins, we may never know.

Here's How The World Reacted To The Death Of Cuban Leader Fidel Castro

Ask a dozen people who Fidel Castro was, and you’ll get a dozen different answers. To many, he was a revolutionary who gave Cuba back to the people following his coup in 1959. To others, he was a dictator who oppressed his people and nearly plunged the world into nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis only a few years later.

It’s understandable then that reactions have been so mixed since his brother, Raul Castro, announced that the 90-year-old had died early this morning.

In Cuba itself, a period of mourning has been announced on the island until 4 December, when his ashes will be laid to rest in Santiago.

President Obama, who ended the United State’s embargo of Cuba, said in a statement that “history will judge the enormous impact” of Cuba’s late leader on the world. While president-elect Donald Trump was far less diplomatic in his reaction.

Reactions on social media have seen just as mixed.

This 27-Year-Old Will Become The First Woman To Visit Every Country In The World

Recently, we covered a story about a dude who managed to visit every country in the world before he turned 40 years old. It’s an amazing accomplishment and to think that he basically got his job on board with his decision and he chronicled that amazing journey is a feat in its own.

But there’s a saying and it goes a little something like “girls do it better,” but what are they talking about, exactly?

It could be visiting every country in the world in record time.

Because Cassandra De Pecol has almost visited every single country in the world and she’s only 27 years old. WHAT.

1

She’s on track to become the first female, American, youngest, and fastest traveler on the planet to visit all the world’s 196 countries.

2

She’s already hit up 181 countries and has 40 days to finish out the remaining 15, which the 27-year-old from Connecticut can easily accomplish.

3

She’s calling her trip around the globe Expedition 196. You might be wondering how in the hell she’s able to travel the world and hold down a job.

4

She’s employed as an ambassador for peace with the International Institute for Peace Through Tourism.

5

Her whole life centers around traveling and tourism, along with taking gorgeous photos and posting them to her Instagram account.

6

She also leverages her nearly 68,000 thousand followers for free stays in hotels all over the world.

7

She snaps photos of the exotic venues she stays in and that covers the cost of her rooms. Smart move.

She’s also a fitness enthusiast, triathlete, and entrepreneur.

8

Her trip has cost her almost $ 200,000 so far, but she’s gotten almost all of it covered by sponsors.

9

She’s been able to do some amazing things…like cuddle lion cubs.
13

Go skiing in Colorado – without a coat!

14

Chilling on a beach in Kiribati.

15

And she visited Mostar bridge in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

16

The camera set-up she uses to snap her amazing photos from around the world is small yet powerful.

17

And of course, she has to bring her world map.

Someone Ranked The World's Best Melting Cheeses In The World And I'm Salivating

Hey, you like, cheese, right? And if you’re lactose intolerant, like me, then I’m so so sorry. (Not like it stops me from eating it, though.)

hibengaluru

And there’s something especially amazing about melted cheese. Seriously, almost every savory dish in the world can be improved by adding gobs of melted cheese to it. My stomach may not agree with it, but I can tell you, my heart definitely does.

But when it comes to melting, not all cheeses are created equal. Insider had the opportunity to speak with the manager of Murray’s Cheese at NYC’s Grand Central Station, and here’s his definitive rankings of the worst and best cheeses for melty, delicious goodness.

Sheep’s milk cheese kinda suck for melting purposes.

flickr

Cheeses like Manchego, roquefort, and feta aren’t the best when it comes to melting, due to their higher protein and butter fat contents. They tend to just release oil and “sweat”, rather than spreading their cheesy love all over your food.

High moisture cheeses are pretty damn good for melting.

usfoods

Cheddar and gouda, due to their high moisture content, make them prime candidates for melting. REAL American cheese, not those crappy Kraft Singles, are a good pick, as are red wax and smoked gouda cheeses. Yum.

Soft cheeses made from cow’s milk.

flickr

Greensward. Brie. Harbison. Yeah, they sound all like the super fancy cheeses put adjacent to figs, dried fruit, and grapes on a wooden cutting board during a cocktail hour, but they’re also amazing cheeses for melting. You just need to put them in the oven for a few minutes and then you can start dunking whatever you want in the melted goodness before you.

Alpine cheeses are the best melting cheeses, hands down. Game over. Nothing else to see here, people.

istock

Gruyere, emmental, comte, challherhocker; pretty much any cheese that comes from the Alps are known as the “foundations of cooking”. Which is kinda crazy once you consider that they achieved their delicious flavor and texture accidentally.

Because it was difficult for people to transport large quantities of salt up to the Swiss Alps, the cheeses had to be made in copper kettles with much less salt, resulting in the superior meltiness that we enjoy in Alpine cheeses.

Aren’t you happy you’re that much more knowledgeable about cheese now?

These Pictures Of Disney World Abandoned Before Hurricane Matthew Are Super Creepy

To give you an idea of just how severe Hurricane Matthew is, Disney World is closing down in preparation of the mega storm, something the theme park hasn’t done in over 11 years.

But the happiest place on Earth is only made happy by the throngs of parents being dragged by their shouting children in unforgivable heat all while trying to avoid spending a fortune on a bottle of soda or a huge lollipop.

Because without people, the happiest place on earth is just downright creepy.

What makes these photos even creepier is when you consider that over 500 people have already been killed by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti.

Which is insane, because every time you hear the name Matthew, you probably think of Broderick, or Matt LeBlanc.

Or Chris Matthews, who, despite having a program called Hardball, isn’t the first person when you think of something intimidating.

It’s just so eerie.

Unreal. (h/t hellogiggles)

These Are The Friendliest Countries In The World And America Doesn't Even Break The Top 10

Whenever my friends and family visit from overseas, they’re usually shocked by how closed-off people are in North Jersey and NYC. They were dumbfounded that I didn’t know more about my neighbors and at first, I thought they were just being dramatic.

The more I thought about it though, the more I realized that I really don’t know my neighbors at all. Hell, whenever I drive if someone cuts me off I throw out such horrible swear words and vile insults that I’m taken aback by just how disgusting I can become.

But according to this report, the rest of the United States doesn’t really suffer from that problem: it turns out that there are countries that are a lot less friendly than America.

InterNations surveyed more than 14,000 people from 67 countries around the world to find out what the most and least friendly countries were.

internations

The study specifically focuses on ex-patriates, i.e., people who have decided to leave their country of origin to go and permanently live in another country.

The United States dropped 13 places from last year’s study, coming in at 26.

One of the biggest drawbacks many cited as to relocating to the US was the amount of taxes and lack of services provided for said taxes. But if you’re a US citizen, you wouldn’t need a survey to tell you that.

They also broke down the reasons why people moved abroad: some did it for school, work, for romance, or to accompany a spouse’s work relocation.

internations

According to the report, the friendliest country surveyed was Taiwan. The least friendly? Kuwait, which was pretty much confirmed by this guy.

internations

Malta, Ecuador, Mexico, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Australia, Austria, Luxemborg, and Czech Republic rounded out the top 10.

The survey considered many factors, including quality of life, ease in finding a job, political stability, and overall friendliness of the people.

You can check out the entire report here, which provides a boat-load of data. Definitely worth looking into if you’re planning on shipping out in search of greener pastures.
